Dietary Supplements: Beneficial?

Are dietary supplements beneficial? Vitamin and mineral deficiencies may contribute to many ailments and inhibit the body from optimally functioning.

With so many processed foods that are devoid of ample nutrition on the market, it may be beneficial to add dietary supplements to one’s lifestyle, in conjunction with regular exercise in order to maximize nutrition and improve one’s immune system.

Over the  years I’ve taken many different supplements and knowing what works, apart from the scientific/clinical studies behind them, is an asset. Firstly, what is a dietary supplement?

It is defined as a supplement intended to provide nutrients that may otherwise not be consumed in sufficient quantities. With hundreds of them on the market, it can be a dilemma on which ones to purchase.

Dietary supplements can provide many benefits for individuals who may not receive all the necessary nutrients from their diet alone. These supplements can help to fill gaps in nutrient intake and support overall health and wellbeing. For example, individuals who follow strict diets or have certain dietary restrictions may not consume enough of certain vitamins and minerals, such as iron or vitamin D3. In these cases, dietary supplements can help to ensure that the body receives the necessary nutrients to function properly.

The reason I don’t normally recommend a multivitamin is because, for most brands, the potency of their nutrients tends to be very low. In my opinion it is better to purchase vitamins individually in order to get the sufficient amounts that our bodies need, especially when training.

Furthermore, some individuals may require higher levels of certain nutrients due to medical conditions or lifestyle factors. For example, pregnant women may require additional folic acid to support the healthy development of their fetus, while athletes may require more protein to support muscle growth and recovery. In these cases, dietary supplements can be a useful tool to meet these increased nutrient needs.

In addition to filling nutrient gaps, dietary supplements may also have other health benefits. For example, some supplements like omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to support heart health, while others like probiotics may support gut health and immune function. However, it is important to note that the research on the health benefits of dietary supplements is ongoing.

Overall, dietary supplements can be a valuable addition to a healthy and balanced diet, providing additional nutrition and supporting overall health and wellbeing. However, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any supplements, especially if you have a medical condition or are taking medication, to ensure that they are safe and appropriate for you.
