Make Your Health a Priority, Not an Option

July 26, 2019 by Reuel Payne

Many people view living a healthy lifestyle as optional, something that can be pushed aside when life gets busy. However, I firmly believe that making your health a priority is essential for experiencing a better quality of life. In this article, I’ll share practical tips and insights to help you prioritize your well-being.

1. Make the Time

Our fast-paced lives often place other priorities, such as work, finances, and relationships, ahead of our own health. But remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritizing self-care isn’t selfish; it’s necessary. When you take care of yourself, you’re better equipped to care for others. Here’s how to make the time:

  • Schedule It: Treat your health-related activities as non-negotiable appointments. Whether it’s exercise, meal planning, or relaxation, allocate time for them in your daily routine.
  • Set Boundaries: Learn to say no when necessary. Protect your time and energy by avoiding overcommitment.
  • Self-Care Rituals: Create simple self-care rituals, a morning brisk walk, gym time, or a healthy breakfast that become non-negotiable habits.

2. Work Out a Schedule

Finding time for exercise and nutritious meals doesn’t happen by chance. It requires intentional planning. Consider the following:

  • Exercise: Choose a workout routine that fits your schedule. Whether it’s strength training, or cycling, consistency matters more than intensity. Even a little exercise is better than none.
  • Meal Planning: Try to plan some meals ahead of time. Meal prepping can make a significant difference.

3. Don’t Make Changes, Make Habits

Creating lasting habits is more effective than short-term changes. Here’s how to build health-promoting habits:

  • Consistency: Regularity is key. Rather than drastic changes, focus on small, sustainable adjustments.
  • Environment: Surround yourself with health-conscious individuals. Their habits will influence yours.
  • Discipline: Treat exercise and nutritious eating as non-negotiable. Invest in your health like you would any other valuable asset.

4. Be Realistic

Avoid chasing extreme goals or following unsustainable trends. Instead:

  • Avoid Quick Fixes: Losing 10 pounds in a month or working out intensely every day rarely leads to lasting results. Aim for gradual progress.
  • Lifestyle, Not Fad: Prioritize lifelong health over short-term fixes. Consistency matters more than intensity.
  • Listen to Your Body: Understand that everyone’s journey is unique. Be patient with yourself and celebrate small victories.

5. Make the Most of Your Time

Remember, life doesn’t come with a rewind button. Prioritize your health because:

  • You Have One Body: You can’t trade it in for a new one. Take care of it.
  • Self-Care Isn’t Selfish: Just as you care for loved ones, care for yourself.
  • Choices Have Consequences: Every decision, healthy or unhealthy, affects your well-being.

Takeaway

This isn’t a rehearsal; it’s the real deal. Prioritize your health, not as an option, but as a lifelong commitment. Your future self will thank you.
